Archival Reprint: Filson Japan Lookbook

October 13th, 2011

Per yesterday’s entry, I’m reprinting a few of my favorite views from the strangely compelling, Filson Japan lookbook, “The Ballad of Portraits”. I love the stylized presentation of the figures who look like colorized, plasticized transplants from a 19th century daguerreotype (if Dodge Sportsmans appeared in daguerreotypes). Since most web image content disappears from view or gets redistributed away from its original source, I wanted to archive a copy for myself for future reference. It’s a shame we cannot mail away for a print copy.

Golddiggers Jacket for Women

Since it’s nearly impossible to source Filson Italy in the US, I’m prepping this catalog of images for wishful shopping. My images come from the official Filson Italy site, Japanese webshops and flickr. While I’ve known about Filson Italy (and the Black Label) for awhile, I recently discovered that they now have a “Donna” collection for women. I’m not wild about most of the line, but I do love the unfortunately named “Golddiggers” coat (essentially an upland game jacket in red plaid wool). When I emailed Filson Italy to inquire about the jacket, I was told that it would only be sold in Italy–and not via web shops. Hoping to have a custom version made in the US, Filson informed me that their wool is too thick to support the design of the coat (and further, that their custom order program is closed through April 2012). So–despite our internet age, not all the glitters can be owned.

Addendum: check out the new Filson Japan lookbook, Ballad of Portraits 2011.

Archival Restock: Canvas Duck Rucksacks

October 10th, 2011

We just restocked the AC web shop with canvas duck rucksacks. In addition to red, we’re adding dark brown and orange to our colorways. These rucksacks are made of a sturdy 18 ounce #8 cotton duck. Aside from the material change, they are identical to our classic rucksack and are made in our Springfield, Oregon workshop.

For those who have been waiting for us to resupply our inventory of AC waxed twill rucksacks, we now have bags in navy, gray, olive and our ever popular ranger tan.

Archival Deadstock

October 7th, 2011

It’s great to see US brands like Red Wing, Wolverine and Thorogood reissuing work boots and shoes from their archives. While the original versions were designed for hard wear, modern offerings are likened to dress shoes and sold at a premium. If you’re longing for the real deal, take a look at these ebay auctions for deadstock shoes and boots from the 1930s and 1940s.

Fall Recommendation: Down Vests

October 5th, 2011
The seasons are finally changing, and as crisper weather rolls in, may we recommend that you turn to a vest when you’re chilled? We all love our Westmorland and Retro-X vests at Archival, but we also have a soft spot for goose down. There’s nothing lighter and more magically insulating, and they make a great pillow when you’re backpacking. Here’s a round-up of some historical models pulled from Backpacker Magazine and eBay, as well as some current offerings.

Archival Restock: Billykirk Leathergoods

October 3rd, 2011

We’ve restocked the AC Web Shop with more best quality leather goods by our friends at Billykirk. We now carry the Abstract and “Handmade in USA” skinny cuffs in dark brown with brass hardware. The card/cash case, one of the few small wallets on the market, pairs well with our new, comparatively voluminous AC flap wallet.
